Developmental Edit

What is a developmental edit?

A developmental edit is the most thorough type of edit. It is also known as structural editing.

I’ll read your novel and write a detailed editorial letter covering the broad strokes of the structure plot, character and voice. I’ll consider key questions about character motivations, timelines, pacing and plot holes. My letter will cover the strengths of your novel and highlight what you’ve done well, as well as the weaknesses and give you advice for your next steps.

This editorial report will be longer and go into more depth than a manuscript assessment and alongside this letter, you will receive a marked up manuscript with notes and comments on specific sections and examples from the letter. I will also suggest light line-edits where appropriate but please note this isn’t a full line-edit service.

A one-hour video call (or an email exchange if you prefer!) is included in this service to ensure that we can talk through the suggestions I’ve made and how you might implement them. This is your opportunity to ask any questions you have and to discuss your changes.

Editing is a collaborative process so there may well be things I’ve proposed which you don’t agree with – this is fine and completely normal! In my mind, an editor’s role isn’t to tell you exactly what to change and how, but to shine a light on your manuscript and act as a sounding board so you can come up with a solution far more satisfying than anything I could have suggested! This is your book and I’m here to use my experience to help you create a novel you’re proud of and maximise your chance of success.

If this sounds like the right route for you then get in touch for a quote through the form below or via my contact page. If you’re not sure if this is the best edit for your novel then send me a message and we can talk through your project or book in a free consultation call to discuss in more detail.
