Who am I?

During my publishing career I worked at large traditional publishers like Hodder and Stoughton, agile independents like Canelo, and was a Senior Commissioning Editor at Joffe Books, acquiring and editing crime and thrillers.

I have worked with experienced authors, published bestsellers and prize-shortlisted novels. I’ve managed busy submissions inboxes and judged competitions.

Now, as a freelance editor, I know what it takes to stand out.

Publisher experience

I’ve seen all sides of the publishing industry. I’ve been a bookseller, I worked a large ‘Big Five’ publisher on branding and creative projects, then at a boutique publishing PR agency, where I secured publicity for authors, before I found my home in editorial. I spent over six years working at leading independent publishers and publishing bestsellers and worked my way up to senior commissioning editor before I left to go freelance.

Accredited Training

I am an entry-level member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading and a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association.

I have completed training courses with the CIEP, the Publishing Training Centre and Club Ed.

Education

I hold an MA (Hons) in English and Modern History from the University of St Andrews and an MA in Publishing Media from Oxford Brookes University.

My genres

Finding an editor who understands your genre and market is crucial so I only take on projects I’m confident I’m a good fit for. I specialise in commercial fiction so I love anything with pace, a strong plot and characters I don’t want to say goodbye to.

  • “She was instrumental in The Dinner Lady Detectives becoming the series it is. It never would have happened without Siân and her endless hard work. If you are looking for an editor with bags of talent and who is also a lovely person then Siân is your go-to!”

    Hannah Hendy

  • "Siân is a meticulous and inspiring editor whose outstanding work has always elevated my manuscripts. She has an amazing eye for detail and the commercial elements of a story."

    Sarah Ward

  • "Siân is a brilliant editor. She's great at pinpointing the strengths and weaknesses of a manuscript and giving detailed feedback on how to make the best things shine and resolve the issues. Working with Siân made me feel really confident that I was telling the best story I could – she really understood what I wanted to do and helped me get there."

    Anna Britton

  • “I had the pleasure of working with Siân for my first novel with Joffe Books. Her ability to hone in on the elements that create tension and suspense allowed me to take my novel to the next level. She is also very easy to work with, answering questions and adding to a safe environment where creativity can thrive. I’m beyond thrilled with the product we created together, and anyone would be lucky to work with her.”

My editorial philosophy

Support

Writing a book is hard and publishing can be draining. I’m here to help you and ensure you put your best book forward.

I’m driven by a desire to help you make your book as strong as it can be and offer feedback in a clear and friendly manner.

Education

Teaching is a big part of my role as an editor. In giving you feedback, I want you to have the tools you need to write a bestseller.

I’m not just focused on this book, but in your career long-term and giving you the resources to become a better writer.

Collaboration

This is your story. I’ll offer suggestions and highlight problems but you don’t have to say yes to all of them. I won’t be offended!

All I ask is that you give my comments fair consideration and try and understand where I’m coming from. Often in understanding the root cause of the problem, you’ll come up with a far better solution!
